Pylon Audio Opal 30 mkII Floorstanding Loudspeakers

Pylon Audio Opal 30 mkII is the second-generation three-way model of the Opal series, designed with greater freedom, resolution and scale of sound to fill even larger rooms with music. While the proven three-way midrange-tweeter-woofer-woofer configuration with a rear bass-reflex port has been retained, virtually every other part of the design has undergone a thorough modernisation.

The Opal 30 mkII combines two Pylon Audio PSW 18.8 CP woofers with a dedicated PSM 18.8 CP midrange driver and the latest PST 30.4-TGN tweeter. A redesigned crossover architecture, increased internal volume for the bass section and lower bass-reflex tuning contribute to deeper, more resolved and better structured low frequencies.

Key Features

  • Three-way design with dedicated high-frequency, midrange and bass drivers.
  • Two Pylon Audio PSW 18.8 CP woofers with thicker, heavier and stiffer cellulose cones.
  • Pylon Audio PSM 18.8 CP dedicated midrange driver with a lighter rigid cellulose cone.
  • PST 30.4-TGN tweeter with a graphene-reinforced textile dome.
  • Redesigned crossover architecture using only air-core coils in the signal path.
  • Lower-tuned rear bass-reflex port and increased internal bass-section volume.
  • 22 mm lacquered front baffle with recessed driver baskets and internally mounted tweeter.
  • 18 mm MDF cabinet with internal ribbing and damping filling.
  • 90 dB efficiency and 4 Ohm impedance.
  • 135 W nominal / 200 W maximum power.
  • 35 Hz–30 kHz frequency response.
  • Designed for rooms of 20–40 m².

Rebuilt from the Ground Up

The original Opal 30 represented the pinnacle of the series. For its successor, Pylon Audio retained the proven three-way configuration with a dedicated midrange, tweeter, two woofers and a rear bass-reflex port, while thoroughly modernising the rest of the design.

The Opal 30 mkII is designed to maintain bandwidth and microdetail during quiet listening while retaining dynamics and clarity at higher levels. The redesigned crossover architecture uses only air-core coils in the signal path, avoiding the distortions associated with ferromagnetic cores.

Two Woofers and Deeper Bass

The bass section uses two Pylon Audio PSW 18.8 CP woofers. By reconfiguring the cabinet interior, Pylon Audio increased the internal volume available to the bass section without changing the external dimensions of the loudspeaker. The rear bass-reflex port has also been tuned lower.

The new cellulose woofer cones are thicker, heavier, stiffer and more durable. More powerful magnetic systems control their movement with greater force and precision, while the rigid-piston behaviour of the cones allows them to withstand strong bass impulses during highly dynamic passages.

Stamped-steel baskets have been replaced by precisely moulded openwork plastic baskets designed to reduce air noise and compression. These changes allow the lowest registers to extend deeper with greater resolution and structure, while increasing the power handling of the complete system.

A Dedicated Midrange Driver

The three-way design uses a dedicated Pylon Audio PSM 18.8 CP midrange driver based on the woofer architecture. Its powerful magnetic system drives a lighter, rigid cellulose cone designed for detailed operation at high acceleration.

This dedicated midrange section is designed to reveal vocal nuance and accurately reproduce strings, brass and fine instrumental detail throughout the middle of the frequency range.

PST 30.4-TGN Tweeter

High frequencies are handled by the latest Pylon Audio PST 30.4-TGN tweeter. Its textile dome is reinforced with graphene and features a diaphragm area that is fifty percent larger than the previous design.

The vented construction allows the tweeter to extend further down in frequency and blend seamlessly with the midrange driver. A Faraday ring reduces distortion, while an efficient heatsink helps maintain dynamics without compression during extended listening at high levels.

22 mm Front Baffle and Reinforced MDF Cabinet

The driver baskets are recessed into a lacquered 22 mm front baffle to create a smooth transition from the cones to the cabinet surface. The tweeter is mounted from the inside and operates with a shallow profile formed directly into the baffle, improving time alignment with the midrange and reducing reflections.

The slender cabinet is constructed from 18 mm MDF with internal ribbing and damping filling. Its design was fine-tuned using measurements taken in Pylon Audio's anechoic chamber with a laser vibrometer.

Designed for Larger Rooms

Opal 30 mkII offers 90 dB efficiency, a 4 Ohm impedance and a frequency response of 35 Hz–30 kHz. Nominal power handling is rated at 135 W, with maximum power of 200 W.

Pylon Audio recommends the Opal 30 mkII for rooms from 20 to 40 m². Magnetic speaker grilles are included.
